Discover the Meaning, Magick, and Method Behind Choosing Your Sacred Name.
What Is a Craft Name?
A craft name, also called a magical or be-witching name, is a unique identity adopted by practitioners of witchcraft, paganism, or other mystical paths. This name is often used in rituals, spells, or sacred spaces to embody one’s magickal persona and deepen their connection to their practice.
The tradition of taking on a craft name symbolises a rebirth into your magical journey, offering a layer of protection, intention, and empowerment. Just as the name you were given at birth ties you to your earthly identity, your craft name anchors you in your spiritual work.
Why Have a Craft Name?
1. Sacred Purpose:
Your craft name represents the magical essence of who you are or aspire to become.
2. Energetic Protection:
Using a craft name in your practice can create a boundary between your mundane and magickal selves, protecting your personal identity.
3. Manifestation Tool: The name serves as a focus for your intentions and personal growth, aligning your energy with your goals.
How to Find Your Craft Name
1. Reflect on Your Path:
Think about your values, beliefs, and the aspects of your magickal practice that resonate most deeply with you. Are you drawn to nature, mythology, or celestial imagery?
2. Explore Symbolism:
Dive into numerology, astrology, or favourite symbols. For example, if the moon guides your practice, you might explore names like Selene, Luna, or Moirae.
3. Meditation and Divination:
Sit in quiet contemplation or use divination tools like tarot or pendulums to ask for guidance.
4. Research and Experimentation:
Look into names from mythologies, languages, or cultures that align with your path. Combine words, sounds, or phrases to craft a unique name.
5. Feel the Connection:
When you find the right name, you’ll feel an intuitive “click.” It should feel empowering, comforting, or both.
Finding your Craft Name as a Hereditary Witch
Otherwise, you may find your Craft Name through means of Ancestral Guidance...
If you’re a Hereditary Witch, your craft name may come through a direct connection to your lineage. It might be drawn from your Clan’s/Tribe's/Coven's name, passed down through generations, or gifted to you in a dream by an Ancestor in the Blue Room—a sacred, mystical space where hereditary witches and natural-born intuitives visit to seek guidance, manifest and connect with their ancestors.
• Reflect on your family’s traditions, stories, or ancestral symbols.
• Pay attention to dreams, especially those involving ancestors or recurring imagery like a crescent, star, or flame.
• Honour your Clan’s name and/or Coven's name by incorporating it into your craft name
Your craft name is more than a label—it’s a reflection of your magical inheritance, a bridge between past and present, and a guiding light for your future path.
For instance,
my craft name, Lady Crescent, was bestowed upon me at the age of 17 during my grounding ceremony—a rite of passage for hereditary witches in their 17th year of life. As a firstborn, my name reflects the role I would have held as a leader of my ancestral Clan of Curran, where women traditionally led. The name “Curran” loosely translates to “Crescent” in English, symbolising the light of the waxing moon and the lineage’s connection to cycles and renewal. Thus, as the Lady of Curran, my craft name became Lady Crescent, honouring both my heritage and my role within it.
Using Your Craft Name
Once chosen, your craft name can be as public or private as you wish. Some share theirs openly, while others reserve it for rituals or inner circles. You might even have multiple names—for example, one for group work and another for personal practice.
Choosing a craft name is a deeply personal and empowering process. It’s a chance to connect with your highest self and weave intention into your identity. Whether whispered to the moon or spoken in a circle of kindred souls, your craft name is a reflection of your magickal journey and a symbol of the power within.
What will your craft name reveal about you?
Bless'd Be,
Lady 🌙
